Excess speed is a problem in Spring Cove, Little Manly Cove and Manly Cove. Spring Cove is particularly bad because of the number of swimmers, ski paddlers and the fairy penguins. NSW Maritime has previously agreed to put up new, larger signs in a preferred location, facing towards the incoming vessels at Cannae Point. This is now 12 months old and all they have done is replace a large sign, facing the wrong way with a smaller sign still facing the wrong way.
WASH
Wash is another issue for all bays, but a particular problem for the vessels
anchored in Spring Cove. The massive wash from Ferries and Jet Cats is again
providing a headache for all and often a major safety issue
PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS
New pump out laws are only aimed at commercial operators and there appears
to be a serious anomaly with this. The other important issue is when is the
NSW Maritime going to increase pump out locations? And when will they make
the locations user friendly so that all vessels can get top the jetty?
MOORINGS
Moorings are again the focus of the NSW Maritime. Manly Cove is under review
and there is a push to remove block and chain moorings. NSW Maritime may
decide to use Manly Cove as a test area for the new environmentally friendly
moorings.
NSW Maritime's new GPS tracking of moorings system is operating but we are
yet to see the benefits, other than another bureaucratic headache for boat
owners.
SECURITY
Too many owners are still leaving
valuable equipment on their boat in view of passers-by. Outboard motors,
dinghies, fishing gear and electronic equipment are being left as easy targets for thieves..
SAFETY
Too many fishing boats are being launched at L M Cove in the dark without
lights. It is also common for the boats to come home late without any Nav
lights.
NSW MARITIME POLICIES
NSW Maritime representatives at the Marine Watch are not able to discuss
policy issues and communicate directions to the boating community. We need
to have a rep at these meetings who has the authority to discuss the issues.
Water Police are now sending a community rep but again the rep does not
appear to have the authority to discuss issues.
